Key Figures

A compact reference to the principal contributors to the philosophy of space and time, ancient to contemporary. Each entry gives the central contribution and points to the pages where it is developed. For the narrative, see the history page; for the underlying method, the method page.


Antiquity and the Middle Ages

  • Zeno of Elea (c. 490–430 BCE) — the paradoxes of motion and plurality (Achilles, the Dichotomy, the Arrow, the Stadium): the first rigorous challenge to the coherence of the continuum and of motion.
  • Aristotle (384–322 BCE) — time as "the number of motion with respect to before and after" (a relational, change-dependent view anticipating Leibniz and Barbour); denial of the void; the three-dimensionality of space; place as the boundary of the container.
  • Augustine of Hippo (354–430) — creation with time, not in it: time as a feature of the created order with no "before," the classic statement that time may have a boundary rather than an infinite past (see also the religion treatment).
  • Al-Ghazālī (1058–1111) — the impossibility of an infinite past and hence a beginning of the world: the kalām ancestor of debates over the beginning of time.

The scientific revolution and the Enlightenment

The nineteenth century

  • Carl Friedrich Gauss, János Bolyai, Nikolai Lobachevsky — the discovery of consistent non-Euclidean geometry, refuting the necessity of Euclidean space.
  • Bernhard Riemann (1826–1866) — the theory of curved manifolds and variable curvature; the suggestion that physical geometry is empirical — the mathematics general relativity would need.
  • Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894) — the empiricist epistemology of geometry; the role of rigid-body motions.
  • Ernst Mach (1838–1916) — Mach's principle: inertia determined by the cosmic matter distribution, not absolute space; the empiricist critique that inspired Einstein.
  • Ludwig Boltzmann (1844–1906) — the statistical-mechanical account of entropy and the arrow of time; the reply to the reversibility and recurrence objections.
  • J. M. E. McTaggart (1866–1925) — the A-series/B-series distinction and the argument for the unreality of time: the source of the modern tense debate.
