What Is the Philosophy of Space and Time?
The philosophy of space and time is the rational examination of what space, time, and spacetime are: whether they exist in their own right or only as relations among things, whether the flow of time and the division into past, present, and future are objective, and what the geometry of the world owes to reason and what to experiment. It sits on the border between general metaphysics — where the questions were first posed by Zeno, Aristotle, Newton, Leibniz, and Kant — and the philosophy of physics, because since 1905 the answers have been constrained, and sometimes overturned, by relativity and quantum theory. It is philosophy applied to the most pervasive features of the world, the ones presupposed by every other physical description.
This page fixes the subject matter, separates the three different kinds of question the field pursues, lays out the map of positions, and explains why physics and metaphysics here cannot be done in isolation. Three questions, not one
It is tempting to think the philosophy of space and time is a single question — "What are space and time?" — but that conceals three logically independent ones, and progress depends on keeping them apart. They mirror the structure used throughout these notes (compare the split in the free-will problem and the philosophy of religion into distinct metaphysical, epistemic, and semantic strands):
- The ontological question — do space and time exist in their own right? Are spacetime and its parts substances — a container that would remain if all matter were removed — or is talk of "space" and "time" only shorthand for relations among bodies and events, so that with no bodies there is no space? This is the substantivalism–relationism debate, running from Newton against Leibniz through Newton's bucket to the hole argument in general relativity.
- The temporal question — is the passage of time real? Even granting that there is a time, it is a further question whether the present is metaphysically privileged, whether time genuinely flows, and whether the future is open or already settled. This is the province of McTaggart's A/B distinction, of presentism versus eternalism, and of the arrow of time.
- The geometric/epistemic question — what is the status of geometry? What kind of truth is "space is Euclidean" — a truth of reason known a priori (Kant), an empirical discovery (after general relativity), or a matter of convention? And how do we come to know the structure of space at all? This is taken up under the epistemology of geometry and Zeno's paradoxes of the continuum.
The three interact. A relationist who denies that space exists independently (ontological) will read the geometry of space off the possible configurations of matter rather than off a substance (geometric); an eternalist who holds that all times are equally real (temporal) fits naturally with the four-dimensional block universe that relativity suggests. A complete view must answer all three.
The map of positions
On the ontological question the principal positions are:

Why physics and metaphysics cannot be separated here
What sets this field apart from most of metaphysics is that its questions are not settled from the armchair alone. Three episodes show physics forcing the metaphysics:
- Newton's bucket turned the abstract Leibniz–Newton dispute into an empirical one: rotation produces real inertial effects, which seem to require something — absolute space, or at least an inertial structure — beyond the relations among bodies. See Newton's bucket.
- Special relativity abolished absolute simultaneity: whether two distant events are "at the same time" depends on the frame. That directly threatens presentism, which needs a global present, and pushes toward the block universe — see the Rietdijk–Putnam argument. - General relativity made spacetime dynamical — the metric is a physical field that bends and is bent — reopening the substantivalism debate in a new key through the hole argument, and making the geometry of space a contingent, measured thing rather than an a priori given.
But the traffic runs both ways. Physics does not wear its ontology on its sleeve: the same formalism can be read substantivally or relationally, tensed or tenseless. Deciding which interpretation is correct is philosophical work, guided by — but not dictated by — the physics. What the field is not
- Not physics. The physicist asks how spacetime behaves and what equations govern it; the philosopher asks what its behaviour shows about what it is. The metric field is a datum for both, but "is the metric a substance or a relation?" is not a question any measurement answers.
- Not pure a priori metaphysics. Unlike some debates in general metaphysics, this one cannot proceed while ignoring the sciences: a theory of time that contradicts relativity, or a theory of the continuum that ignores real analysis, is not a live option. - Not the history of science. Newton, Leibniz, and Einstein appear throughout, but as authors of arguments and positions still in play, not as objects of purely historical study. The history page collects the narrative thread separately.
Where this leaves us
The philosophy of space and time is best entered through a grid: three questions — do space and time exist in their own right? is the passage of time real? what is the status of geometry? — each crossed with a spread of positions, and each answerable only with one eye on physics. Almost every dispute in the field sits somewhere on that grid, and most confusion comes from sliding between its cells: answering an ontological question with a temporal argument, or treating a result about the physics of spacetime as if it settled its metaphysics by itself.
